Rana O. Afifi, MD (she/her/hers)

Dr. Afifi is a vascular surgeon and an Associate Professor in the department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CVS) at UTHealth Houston.
She is a specialist in vascular and endovascular surgery. She graduated from medical school at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in 2004. After completing her general surgery residency and vascular and endovascular surgery fellowship at Carmel Hospital, she completed a complex aortic surgery fellowhsp at UTHealth Houston.
Upon completion of her fellowship, she joined the CVS department at UTHealth Houston in 2015. Since, she has authored many journal articles, abstracts, and book chapters on various topics related to vascular surgery, and aortic pathology specifically. She has presented at many national and international conferences on aortic pathologies. She is the program director of the Advanced Aortic Surgery Fellowship.
Her curren and ongoing research interest focuses on women’s vascular and cardiac health, and aortic disease in young women specifically. In 2018 she initiated the Women’s Vascular and Cardiac Health Interdisciplinary Initiative leading a group of physicians from different specialties, including CV surgeons, adult congenital Cardiologists (adult congenital, heart failure, cardiac imaging), Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists, Medical Geneticists, Vascular Neurologists, and Clinical Epidemiologists. The goal of this initiative is through collaborative research to eliminate knowledge gaps and clinical disparities and to reduce the morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular disease in women. Dr. Afifi is an active member of the SVS and serves as the chair of the SVS DEI committee.
