Thane Gehring is a rising 3rd year medical student at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City campus with a long-standing interest in surgery. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences at the University of Denver with minors in medical physics and Spanish. While in Denver, he gained three years of biochemistry research experience studying how nucleic acids act as molecular chaperones to prevent protein aggregation, relevant to neurodegenerative diseases. He also completed a field study on the diversity of fungi on an altitudinal gradient in the Eastern Ecuadorian cloud forest. Before medical school Thane worked in tissue recovery, independently recovering vascular tissue for allograft transplantation and as a surgical services assistant, forming a strong interest in vascular surgery. In his free time, Thane pursues anything outdoors. He regularly plays in an Ultimate Frisbee league, is trying to improve his golf game, and is an avid backpacker always looking for an opportunity to practice wildlife photography.
