Kakra Hughes, MD, PhD, DFSVS, FACS is a Tenured Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Howard University and Hospital. A health services researcher with a primary interest centered on the sociodemographic disparities in peripheral artery disease, Kakra currently serves as assistant editor for Journal of Vascular Surgery, associate editor for Annals of Vascular Surgery and previously served as a section editor for Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. He is also a current editorial board member for the Journal of the National Medical Association and a previous editorial board member for the Journal of Endovascular Therapy.
Since joining Howard University’s faculty in 2008, Kakra has served in numerous leadership roles including service on the executive committee of the medical school, several appointment, promotions and tenure committees, president of the medical staff and chair of the medical executive committee.
Kakra obtained a BS (Summa Cum Laude) from Central State University, an MD from Wake Forest University School of Medicine, an MS in Clinical and Translational Research from Georgetown University and a PhD in Health Services Research from the University of Maryland, College Park. His surgical residency was completed at Los Angeles County’s Martin Luther King, Jr./Charles Drew University (including a cardiovascular surgery research fellowship at UCLA) followed by a Vascular Surgery Residency at Harvard Medical School/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and an Endovascular Surgery Fellowship at the Arizona Heart Institute. His clinical interests span the entire spectrum of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.
