Dr. Behzad Farivar is a board-certified vascular and endovascular surgeon and an associate professor of surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. As the founding director of UVA Health’s Aortic Center, he has established advanced protocols for recovery after open aortic surgery and spearheaded the development of cutting-edge treatments for complex aortic conditions using fenestrated and branched technology. Since the center's inception in 2021, it has seen remarkable growth, with a 43% increase in case volume in its first year and a consistent annual growth rate of 17%. Under Dr. Farivar's leadership, the center boasts exceptional patient outcomes, including zero postoperative mortalities for complex aortic procedures, placing it in the top quartile among over 1,000 North American centers reporting to the Vascular Quality Initiative. His research focuses on improving aortic surgery outcomes, developing perioperative recovery protocols, minimizing radiation exposure with non-ionizing technology, and treating aortic conditions in connective tissue diseases and infections. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completed his training at Mount Sinai Health System, University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Cleveland Clinic. Before joining UVA, he was a staff vascular surgeon at Cleveland Clinic's Heart & Vascular Institute and an assistant professor of surgery at Lerner College of Medicine Cleveland Clinic.
