Dr. Peter Nelson is Professor of Surgery, the Mary Louise Todd Chair in Cardiovascular Research, Section Chief of Vascular Surgery, and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Surgery at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He obtained his medical degree and completed general surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts, completed research training in the Harvard-Longwood Vascular Surgery Research Fellowship, and completed a vascular surgery fellowship at Dartmouth. He is board certified in Vascular Surgery. Dr. Nelson has expertise in the full gamut of open and endovascular approaches to vascular disease. He has particular interest in endovascular treatment of abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms, carotid artery stenting, peripheral arterial intervention, and percutaneous hemodialysis access. Dr. Nelson leads a talented group of OU vascular surgeons focused on (1) comprehensive clinical services, (2) innovative translational, clinical, and health services research, (3) community outreach to rural, American Indian, and urban underserved communites for vascular prevention and care, and (4) state of the art simulation-based vascular surgical education. His personal research interests include genomic and proteomic predictors of vascular intervention outcomes, cellular mechanisms of intimal hyperplasia and vascular restenosis, health services trends in minimally invasive vascular technology and disparity in access to care, and immersive simulation and team training in vascular surgery.
