Dr John White is Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Illinois. He received his medical degree with AOA honors from Columbia University where he also undertook his surgical residency training. He completed a vascular fellowship with Drs Bergan, Yao, and Flinn at Northwestern Memorial Hospital prior to his appointment as Assistant Professor of Vascular Surgery at Temple University. He rose to tenured Professor of Surgery, Director of Surgical Research, and was appointed Adjunct Fellow of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics of the University of Pennsylvania. He was nationally recognized for his work developing the field of minimally invasive surgery and was also awarded the Samuel Gross Prize from the Philadephia Academy of Surgery for his research into the cause of aortic aneurysms. In 1999, he assumed the Chair of Surgery at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, a tertiary care hospital associated with the University of Illinois. His enduring interest in both basic science and clinical research has been supported by numerous extramural grants, including the NIH and the Falk Trust and he has served on numerous study sections of the NIH and Office of Naval Research. He has published more than 180 manuscripts and chapters, edited 6 books, granted 1 patent, and given numerous national and international presentations. He has represented the SVS on the TASC, American Heart, and Global Vascular Guidelines efforts. He is clinically active as an Attending Pediatric Vascular Surgeon and he currently serves as Co-Director of the SVS National Pediatric Vascular Surgery Taskforce.
