Joseph L. Mills, M.D. is the Reid Professor and Chief of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He specializes in diabetic foot care, limb salvage and chronic limb-threatening ischemia. Dr. Mills earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his surgical residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, Lackland AFB, Texas. He went on to train in Vascular Surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon, under John M Porter, MD, and subsequently completed a senior fellowship in Endovascular Surgery at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Mills has authored over 400 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, focused on noninvasive diagnosis, vein graft stenosis, intimal hyperplasia and limb-salvage in patients with diabetes mellitus. He has been the principal investigator for over 50 clinical trials, including a number of current investigations.
Among his great many honors, he has served as President of the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society, President of the Western Vascular Society, President of the Association of Program Directors in Vascular Surgery, Director of the American Board of Surgery (ABS), past Chair of the Vascular Surgery Board of the ABS, and a 7-year member of the Surgery Residency Review Committee of the ACGME. He was co-editor of the prestigious "Rutherford's Vascular Surgery" (7th -9th editions), served on the JVS Editorial Board, and is was an Associate Editor (Peripheral Arteries) of the EJVES from 2020-2023. Finally, he is the current President of the SVS.
