Dr. Brigitte Smith is an Associate Professor of Vascular Surgery at the University of Utah, where she also serves as the Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Surgery and Program Director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship. She completed medical school, followed by integrated vascular surgery residency, at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, to which she will be returning as Vice Chair of Education this summer. She completed the Association for Surgical Education – Surgical Education Research Fellowship during residency in 2013, and subsequently earned a Master of Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois – Chicago in 2020.
Dr. Smith holds numerous national leadership positions in surgical education, including member of the Board of Directors for the Association for Surgical Education, member of the Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery (and Chair of the VSB EPA Committee), and Director of the ACGME Board of Directors. Dr. Smith’s research seeks to examine the association between educational variables, including programs, policies, and individual measures of competence, with patient care outcomes in unsupervised practice. Through this work, which has previously been funded by the NBME Stemmler Grant, she seeks to inform performance benchmarks for competency-based medical education systems.
