Dr. Smeds is the former chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at St. Louis University and former program director for the vascular surgery training programs, and currently a tenured professor of surgery in the division as well as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery Cases, Innovations, and Techniques He attended medical school at the University of Rochester, general surgery residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University, and vascular surgery fellowship at St. Louis University. He was faculty at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences previously. He has an interest in risk factor modification in vascular surgery and was the 2016 Wylie Traveling Fellow visiting centers of excellence in tobacco cessation. He recently received a traveling fellowship funding from the Midwestern Vascular Surgery Society and has been examining deep venous arterialization. In addition to broad outcomes research interests in clinical vascular surgery, he has an interest in surgical education and has multiple manuscripts and publications in this area on burnout, mentorship, and sexual harassment/gender disparity in vascular training. He has been involved in several pivotal trials in vascular surgery including most recently the SAVVE Study using the VenoValve for deep venous insufficiency. He has served on several committees of the SVS, VESS, VSB and APDVS and has sits on multiple editorial boards. He is the creator of the Advaced Practical Exposures in Vascular Surgery (APEx-VS) conference that provides education in surgical exposures using lightly embalmed cadavers.
